Nigeria has launched the production of domestic drones to enhance security and modernize its military operations.

Nigeria’s space agency has announced the launch of the production of surveillance and armed drones. These drones, produced by the Defense Space Administration, include the AYBARS-II surveillance drone, ADAN 70 attack drone, SZK-290 reconnaissance drone, and the Oturukpokpo tactical supply drone. It was reported that tests for these drones were conducted in early 2024.

In September, the Nigerian Army held a seminar titled “Digital Transformation and the Smart Soldier Concept,” during which it announced the adoption of the “Smart Soldier” concept as part of its modernization process. General Taoreed Lagbaja, former Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, emphasized how advanced technologies can be integrated into modern military operations. Following his death in early November due to a serious illness, President Bola Tinubu appointed Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Army Staff.
