Russia has opened its first Sambo center in Ethiopia to promote the martial art and strengthen relations between the two countries.

The center was launched under the Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute and the international “Granite Sambo” project.

What is Sambo?
Sambo is a combat sport developed in the Soviet Union for military and security forces, combining techniques from judo, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, boxing, and traditional folk styles. Its versatile nature makes it suitable for both sports and defense purposes.

Project Goals
To introduce the Ethiopian people to Sambo.
To enable Ethiopian athletes to participate in the African Championship in the short term and the World Sambo Championship in the long term.
To strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two countries through science and sport.

Russia’s Contributions
Mikhail Rakhlin will lead the center’s training efforts to develop the potential of Sambo in Ethiopia.
Beginner classes will be offered for both adults and children.
Russian experts will collaborate with Ethiopian athletes to develop joint plans.

Expectations
Pavel Khimchenko, General Director of the Karpinsky Institute, expressed his belief that the project would contribute to the spread of Sambo across Africa and to international successes. It is also expected that the sport will establish trust and mutual respect between the countries.

This initiative is seen not only as a promotion of the sport but also as an important step toward deepening relations between Ethiopia and Russia.
