Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced unemployment figures for March. Turkey’s unemployment rate was 8.6 percent in March, down 0.1 percentage points from the previous month.
Turkey’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 8.6 percent in March compared to the previous month, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced today. According to TurkStat’s household labor force survey, the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over decreased by 19 thousand people to 3 million 57 thousand in March.
The distribution of unemployment rate by gender was measured as 6.8 percent for men and 12 percent for women. The number of employed people increased by 139 thousand in March compared to the previous month and reached 32 million 588 thousand. With this increase, the employment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to 49.5 percent.
Labor force participation rates also increased; total labor force increased by 121 thousand people compared to the previous month and reached 35 million 645 thousand. The labor force participation rate was recorded as 54.2 percent, 71.8 percent for men and 36.9 percent for women.
Unemployment rate among the young population (15-24 years old) decreased by 0.4 points to 15.1 percent. In this group, the unemployment rate of male youth was 11.7 percent, while that of female youth was 21.2 percent.
In addition, seasonally and calendar adjusted average weekly actual working hours increased by 0.3 hours to 43.8 hours in March. The idle labor force ratio, the sum of time-related underemployment, potential labor force and unemployed, decreased by 0.4 points to 24.1 percent. These data provide important indicators on the dynamics of the labor market in the Turkish economy.
