A volcano erupted for the 5th time since December near the town of Grindavik on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula.

The volcano erupted and spewed lava on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula with a population of about 30 thousand. “An eruption occurred in the Sundhnukur crater north of Grindavik,” the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said in a statement. Before the volcanic eruption, which occurred for the 5th time since December on the peninsula, the country’s largest tourist center Blue Lagoon geothermal spas were evacuated. While operations continued at Keflavik International Airport, located just 20 kilometers north of the eruption point, passengers were warned to follow flight information.
The last explosion in the region occurred on March 16.
Located between the two largest tectonic plates in the world, the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, Iceland has 32 active volcanoes.
