The Ministry of Health has warned citizens about protection from the harmful effects of the sun and warned that skin cancers have increased in recent years due to deteriorating environmental factors.

According to information received from Ministry officials, skin cancers are mainly seen in three types: “basal cell carcinoma (BCC)”, “squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)” and “melanoma”.

BCC and SCC, the most common types of skin cancers, usually occur in areas exposed to the sun. Melanoma is known as the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

Stating that there may be an increase in skin cancers in recent years with the effect of deteriorating environmental factors, the authorities point out that early diagnosis is vital in skin cancer and recommend citizens to develop the habit of checking their skin regularly.

It is warned to consult a doctor if new spots, existing freckles or changes in moles are noticed on the skin.

Explaining that moles on the body are generally harmless, the authorities recommend consulting a doctor if one of these moles looks different or if a new mole appears after the age of 25.

Precautions to be taken to prevent skin cancer
Ministry officials listed the measures to be taken to prevent skin cancers as follows:

“Reduce the duration of sun exposure. Avoid being outside between 11.00-15.00 when the sun is intense. Apply sunscreen cream to exposed skin areas 30 minutes before going out in the sun and repeat every 2-3 hours. Protect your skin by wearing tightly woven clothing, wide-brimmed hats and UV-protected glasses. Shade is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself from the sun. Therefore, stay in the shade.”

It is stated that citizens can significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer by taking these precautions and protecting themselves from the sun, especially in summer.
