A fire that broke out in a maquis area in Bursa and spread to the forest in Bursa Uludağ University (BUU) Görükle Campus was brought under control.

A fire broke out in the maquis area near Yolçatı neighborhood of Nilüfer district for an as yet undetermined reason.

After the flames were noticed, the teams of Bursa Regional Directorate of Forestry and Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department were dispatched to the area upon the notification.

Aerial and ground intervention was initiated to control the fire, which spread along the Ayvalı Creek with the effect of the wind and spread to grain cultivated lands.

The teams responded to the flames with 4 airplanes, 4 helicopters and 1 night vision helicopter from the air and dozens of land vehicles, work and service vehicles on the ground.

Students in male and female dormitories on the campus were evacuated. Red deer, horses and other animals cared for in the natural habitat were also evacuated.

It was learned that patients who were hospitalized at BUU Faculty of Medicine Hospital but were not in serious condition were discharged.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ahmet Gümen, Bursa Governor Mahmut Demirtaş and BUU Rector Prof. Dr. Ferudun Yılmaz inspected the area where the fire was brought under control and cooling work continued, and received information from the authorities.

Students will return to their dormitories in the morning

Governor Demirtaş, who coordinates the institutions and organizations involved in the extinguishing work, told AA correspondent that they have taken precautions regarding the BUU Faculty of Medicine Hospital and placed the students in dormitories in other dormitories in the city center.

Stating that students will return to their dormitories in the morning, Demirtaş said, “I called our Minister of Agriculture and Forestry and Minister of Interior from time to time and provided information about the progress of the fire. We do not have a serious problem at the moment. Cooling works continue. Both from the ground and from the air, our night-vision helicopter continues its work.”

Stating that the cooling work is also being carried out on land, Demirtaş said that they think that there will be no problem until the morning in the region where the wind has stopped.

Noting that they took 150 small cattle and 150 cattle in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to safe areas, Demirtaş added that there was no loss of life or loss of life.

“No fire reached our main education blocks in any way”

Rector Prof. Dr. Yılmaz also stated that there was no damage to the main education buildings.

Stating that they rescued the animals from the fire area with the efforts of the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the farm manager, Yılmaz said, “There was some damage to a part of our farm building. The Faculty of Agriculture had a small education building in the area where the fire entered our campus, mostly used by interns, we have a partial damage there, but the fire did not reach our main education blocks in any way.”

In the statement made by the Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, it was announced that the investigation into the cause of the fire is being carried out meticulously.
