Morocco and Nigeria are working on a major gas pipeline project aimed at strengthening intercontinental energy connectivity.

This project, expected to cost 25 billion dollars, will start in Nigeria and pass through 16 African countries along the Atlantic coast before reaching Morocco.

When completed, the pipeline will transport a maximum of 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually. Of this amount, 18 billion cubic meters will be sent to Europe via the Maghreb-Europe Gas Pipeline and the European gas network. This will meet Africa’s energy needs while also contributing to Europe’s energy supply security.

Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHM) plans to complete intergovernmental negotiations by the end of 2024. The bidding process has already been launched, and a project company will be established to handle key responsibilities such as construction, operation, and maintenance. Feasibility studies have confirmed that the pipeline meets international economic and technical standards.

This pipeline will not only ensure energy security for African countries but will also transform Morocco into an energy hub and play a key role in meeting Europe’s energy needs. It also has the potential to strengthen economic cooperation between African nations and accelerate regional development.

This joint initiative between Morocco and Nigeria could mark the beginning of a new era in the region, not only in terms of energy supply but also economically, diplomatically, and environmentally.
