Resolute Mining, the Australian gold miner in a tax dispute with the Malian government, made an initial payment of $80 million.
Australian gold miner Resolute Mining has announced that it has paid the first half of the $160 million in unpaid tax claims related to its Syama gold mine in Mali. The company revealed that the remaining $80 million will be paid in the coming months.
According to the statement, the settlement with the Malian government aims to resolve all outstanding debts related to taxes, customs, and overseas accounts. Resolute financed the initial $80 million payment from its current cash reserves and has made preparations for the future payment.
In recent weeks, Resolute’s CEO, Terence Holohan, and two of the company’s employees in Bamako were briefly detained during discussions with local authorities about the company’s operations in Mali. The company stated that the main goal of these talks was to share information about the operations in the country and to address the tax claims, which Resolute described as “baseless.”
