MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli evaluated the verdicts of the Kobani Trial and argued that the HDP should be shut down. Bahçeli claimed that the organic and organizational link between the HDP and the PKK has been legally registered and criticized the Constitutional Court and reacted against the high judiciary.
Bahçeli evaluated the verdicts given in the Kobani Case, in which 108 defendants, including former HDP co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, were tried in relation to the street protests on October 6-8, 2014. “No one should get away with a crime. The organic and organizational link between the HDP and the PKK has been legally registered.” Bahçeli stated that the Constitutional Court was dragging out the HDP’s closure case and said, “The HDP and its continuation should be shut down.”
Gaza and Palestine
Another important issue on Bahçeli’s agenda was Israel’s attacks on Gaza. Stating that the blood of innocents is still being shed in Gaza, Bahçeli said, “Our civilian and innocent Palestinian brothers and sisters, mostly women and children, numbering more than 35 thousand, have become victims of the crime of genocide.” Stating that it is an important development that the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has applied for an arrest warrant against the Israeli Prime Minister and Defense Minister for crimes against humanity, Bahçeli said, “There is no escape or salvation for genocidaires. The Gaza issue is also Turkey’s issue. If Gaza falls, national security threats will multiply.”
Death of Iranian President Reisi
Bahçeli also evaluated the death of Iranian President Ibrahim Reisi and his accompanying delegation in a helicopter crash. Stating that the helicopter carrying Reisi and the accompanying delegation crashed, Bahçeli said, “Initial statements suggest that the helicopter crashed in mountainous terrain. Is it an accident? Or is it sabotage? I do not know. It is imperative to clarify the truth as soon as possible. The role of Israel and the US must be clarified.”
Allegations of Police Conspiracy
Stating that the conspiracy preparations of FETÖ-like formations nestled in the security and judiciary have been deciphered, Bahçeli said, “It is necessary to consider that there are invisible camouflaged extras and evaluate the possibility of infiltration into the state.” Emphasizing that Turkey is capable of this, Bahçeli called on the Parliament on the issue of immunities and said, “The Parliament should do its duty, immunities should be lifted and the necessary punishment should be given.”
Opposition parties reacted to Bahçeli’s call for the HDP to be shut down. The opposition argued that HDP’s right to democratic politics should be protected and emphasized the importance of the multi-party system in democracy.
The AK Party, the other partner of the People’s Alliance, was cautious about Bahçeli’s statements. AK Party officials stated that the fight against terrorism should be carried out within the framework of the law, and that party closure cases are a matter for the judiciary.
