US electric car and battery manufacturer Tesla has received construction approval to build an Energy Storage Unit manufacturing factory in China.
According to Xinhua, the Lingang Special District Administration in Shanghai announced that the construction permit was issued after the company was allocated land in the city where the factory will be built.
Tesla had signed an agreement with the Shanghai local government in December 2023 to allocate land for the factory.
The factory will produce lithium-ion battery units with an electricity storage capacity of 4 megawatt hours, which Tesla calls “Megapack”.
Construction is planned to be completed this year and the factory is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2025. It is aimed to reach a total energy storage capacity of 40 gigawatt-hours by producing 10 thousand units per year.
Tesla already has a “mega factory” in Lathrop, California, USA, which can produce 10,000 Megapacks per year.
The company plans to expand its existing “giga factory” in Shanghai, which produces over 1 million electric vehicles per year, with an additional capacity of 450,000.
