The number of people who lost their lives in the last 3 days due to extreme temperatures in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Odisha increased to 53.
The extreme heat that has been effective in India for 2 weeks threatens life. The balance sheet of the last 3 days is increasing in Uttar Pradesh and Odisha states where thermometers show 50 degrees. While the number of people who lost their lives in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh rose to 33, an official from the Odisha state Special Relief Commissioner’s office said that 99 suspected heatstroke deaths were reported to them in the last 72 hours, but 20 of them were confirmed.
Cash assistance to families of dead election officials
Among those who lost their lives were police, polling officials, security guards and cleaners who were on duty during the 6-week-long general elections in the country. Navdeep Rinwa, the election officer in Uttar Pradesh, said that the families of the deceased personnel will receive 1.5 million rupees (18 thousand dollars) in compensation. Rinwa said a citizen waiting to vote fainted due to the heat and could not be saved despite all interventions at the hospital.
On the other hand, many regions in the country are experiencing severe water and electricity shortages due to excessive energy consumption. The India Meteorological Department predicted that temperatures will start to drop in the coming days due to the onset of monsoon rains.
