It was reported that many schools were temporarily closed due to excessive rainfall in Hiran region of Somalia and education of more than 37 thousand students was suspended.
According to local media reports, many schools were closed due to flooding caused by heavy rains in Hiran region.
Somali officials stated that schools and educational materials were severely damaged in the floods and noted that education will be disrupted for a long time.
Stating that more than 37 thousand students had to suspend education due to the floods, Mustafa Osman Mohamud, Director of Education of Beledveyn Region in Somalia, said that the education of students was frequently disrupted due to floods in the region.
Elmi Hashi Dhalin, a teacher in Somalia, said that many educational materials were destroyed and classrooms were seriously damaged due to floods.
Parents worried about the disruption of their children’s education have called on the government to build schools on higher ground to protect them from flooding.
