EU to provide €1 billion for Syrians in Turkey

The European Union (EU) has pledged €1 billion in support for Syrians and host communities in Turkey.

The European Union (EU) has pledged €1 billion in support for Syrians and host communities in Turkey.

In a written statement from the EU Commission, details of the results of the 8th Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” were given.

“This assistance will support Syrians both inside Syria and in neighboring countries, as well as host communities in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq,” the statement said, adding that the EU has committed €2.12 billion for 2024 and 2025.

“At the 7th Brussels Conference in 2023, the EU confirmed its €560 million commitment for 2024 for the Syrian population in Syria, as well as for Syrian refugees and vulnerable host communities in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. The EU committed an additional €560 million for 2025 to these neighboring countries. The EU committed €1 billion to support Syrian refugees and vulnerable host communities in Turkey.”

The statement also said that the 2025 commitments are part of a financial package covering the period until 2027.

Emphasis on political solution

The statement underlined the urgent importance of the conference to bring together the EU leadership and its member states, Syria’s neighboring countries, other partner countries and donors, as well as representatives from international organizations, including the United Nations, to support the achievement of a negotiated political settlement in Syria in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

A total of €7.5 billion in grants and loans

Janez Lenarcic, EU Commissioner for crisis management and humanitarian aid, announced at the end of the conference that a total of €7.5 billion in grants and loans had been pledged.
