Germany sets record in granting citizenship

Germany announced that it granted citizenship to around 200,100 foreigners last year. It was stated that this was the highest number since 2000.

Germany announced that it granted citizenship to around 200,100 foreigners last year. It was stated that this was the highest number since 2000.

According to the statement made by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), around 200,100 foreigners were granted German citizenship in 2023. This is the highest level since 2000. Compared to last year, the number of those granted citizenship increased by 19% and has amounted to 31,000 people since 2022.

Syrians were the largest group with 75,500 people granted citizenship. It was stated that these people stayed in Germany for an average of 6.8 years. After Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Romania and Afghanistan were the next countries to receive citizenship. The average age of the new citizens was determined as 29.3 and it was reported that the majority of them were male.

There has also been a notable increase in the number of Israelis applying for German citizenship since October. Between January and April 2024, 6,869 Israelis applied. This represents a significant increase compared to the figures recorded of 5,670 in 2022 and 9,129 in 2023.
