Saudi Arabia stated that the number of people who lost their lives during the Hajj pilgrimage due to extreme heat in the holy land has risen to 1,301, adding that most of those who lost their lives did not register for Hajj.

Saudi Arabia’s Health Minister Fahd Al-Jalajel said in a statement that 83 percent of those who died were people who walked long distances in direct sunlight without adequate shelter or protection. Al-Jalajel described this year’s Hajj management as “successful”, saying that more than 465,000 people were provided with specialized treatment, 141,000 of whom did not receive official permission to perform Hajj.
An Egyptian cabinet official said about half of the pilgrims who died were Egyptians.

Saudi officials said 1.8 million pilgrims visited the holy land this year, with 1.6 million of them coming from abroad.
