The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) announced that the lava flow continues after the eruption of the volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the southwest of the country. Teams dug trenches yesterday to slow the lava flow.

“Over the past few days, lava flowed mostly to the northwest and concentrated near Sylingarfell, but also slowly flowed north and west past Sylingarfell. By Saturday night, lava flow increased north of Sylingarfell to the west and towards Grindavikurvegur. On Saturday, efforts were made to close the gap in the protective barrier at Grindavikurvegur and at around 10.30 pm the lava reached the road just north of the barrier,” the statement said.

IMO stated that the lava is expected to continue to progress slowly and the situation is being closely monitored.
