Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin has approved the new curriculum known as the ‘Turkish Century Education Model’.

The new curriculum, known as the ‘Turkey Century Education Model’, has been approved by Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin. In a recent statement regarding the new curriculum, Minister of National Education Tekin said that one should not move away from human values while using technology:

“As of April 26, we shared a curriculum change package with the public under the name Turkey Century Education Model. We have prepared a curriculum that will keep pace with current developments. In doing so, we wanted to ensure that children are better prepared for the world that awaits them. On the other hand, we have made very important changes in the new model in order to apply digital literacy and artificial intelligence applications to education and training processes. The world is not going to stop, so we need to adapt to the process, and in doing so, we should not move away from our human values that make us who we are. Therefore, in the new curriculum model, we say ‘we will keep up with technological developments, but we will also protect our human values’.”

Passed by the Board of Education

Prof. Dr. Cihad Demirli, Chairman of the Board of Education and Instruction of the Ministry of National Education, stated that the new curriculum has been approved by the Board of Education and Instruction and gave the following details on the subject:

“All opinions and suggestions about the new curriculum draft were carefully evaluated by the Board of Education. Opinions and suggestions were shared with the commissions of the Presidency of the Board of Education and Discipline and the relevant general directorates every day during the pending process. The 67,284 opinions and suggestions received from education stakeholders were classified one by one. Within this framework, some general revisions were made to the curricula. The opinions and suggestions were evaluated and reflected in the curricula as required by the principles of transparency, scientificity and participation. The Turkish Century Education Model curricula for 26 courses regarding the new curriculum were discussed on the agenda of the Board on May 16-22. The new curriculum, which was discussed again, was approved by the Board of Education.”

Starting with 1st, 5th and 9th grade students

The new curriculum will be implemented gradually starting from pre-school, primary school 1st grade, middle school 5th grade and high school 9th grade from the next academic year. The approved new curricula were made available on the Ministry’s website “https://mufredat.meb.gov.tr”.

‘Turkey’s Century Education Model’ debate

The name given to the model on which the new curriculum, known as the “Turkey Century Education Model”, is based has sparked controversy. The model is often criticized for being prepared with an ideological agenda rather than addressing the deficiencies in existing programs.
