Preparations are underway for a regulation to prevent violence against teachers in schools. Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin gave a date for the legal regulation against violence against teachers in a live broadcast.

Following the death of İbrahim Oktugan, the principal of a private high school in Eyüpsultan, Istanbul, due to an armed attack by his student, the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) has taken action to prevent violence against teachers. In a live broadcast on CNN Türk, Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin stated that legal regulations are being prepared to prevent violence against teachers and that they expect these regulations to be submitted to the Parliament next week.

Minister Tekin said, “Important amendments are being made to the Law on Teaching Profession. Deterrent measures are being added to this law to combat violence against teachers. Especially in cases of violence against our teachers, we are introducing articles such as increasing the penalties by 50 percent and arresting the perpetrators of violence.”

Minister Tekin also stated that contracted teachers will also be considered as public servants and similar legal protections will be provided in cases of violence against them. The Ministry also aims to create a more effective security mechanism by increasing security measures in schools.

These legal arrangements aim to increase the security of teachers and prevent violence in educational environments. Minister Tekin added that they hope the regulations will be enacted in early June and that they expect these changes to be welcomed by the education community.
