In the South Pacific country of Papua New Guinea, the government announced that the number of people buried in the landslide on May 24 exceeded 2,000.

The Papua New Guinea government has requested assistance from the United Nations (UN) due to the landslide in the mountainous village of Kaokalam in Enga province.

The government announced that the number of people trapped under the soil exceeded 2 thousand.

Papua New Guinea’s National Disaster Center said in a statement that more than 2,000 people were buried alive and that the disaster caused great destruction.

In a statement made by the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) yesterday, it was stated that 150 houses and approximately 670 people were estimated to be buried under the ground in the disaster.

Landslide in Papua New Guinea

A landslide occurred on May 24 in Kaokalam village in Enga province in the northwestern South Pacific country of Papua New Guinea.

In the videos shared on social media, it is seen that the rock mass breaking off from the top of the mountain dragged the soil on the slope and piled up on the households in the village.
