In Nazilli district of Aydın, a preparatory meeting was held for the disaster response plan of the district under the coordination of AFAD Provincial Directorate.

Within the scope of the preparation of disaster response plans in Nazilli, a meeting was organized under the leadership of AFAD Provincial Director Yalçın Mumcu with the participation of District Governor Sedat Sırrı Arısoy, Nazilli Deputy Mayor İbrahim Özkan, heads of institutions, district managers, mukhtars, NGOs and AFAD volunteers. At the meeting, the disaster situation of Nazilli, the activities to be carried out before and after the disaster and the activities related to the national drill planned to be held in October were discussed.

“We can manage the disaster correctly with pre-planned works”

Speaking first at the meeting, AFAD Provincial Director Yalçın Mumcu stated that after the February 6 earthquake that affected the whole of Turkey, they made detailed studies on what should be done in response issues. Stating that in case of disasters such as earthquakes, fires and floods, teams from outside the disaster area will come to the region and Konya will come to the aid of Nazilli, Director Mumcu said, “In places where disasters occur, teams from outside the region must come because those who experience the disaster cannot intervene themselves. These teams need to know the region they will go to help well and have a good command of disaster response plans. For this purpose, we continue our work uninterruptedly. Provincial Disaster Management Centers can also become unusable in disaster situations. It is very important to think about solutions in advance with a good disaster response plan. In case of a disaster, the Provincial Coordination Board convenes under the chairmanship of the governor of that region and carries out the work with all authorized units. Search, rescue and sheltering are under the management of AFAD. It causes us to manage the disaster properly with pre-planned works.”

“There should be a coordinator in each district”

In the continuation of the meeting, the things to be done for the district disaster response plan were explained. Delivering a speech at the end of the meeting, Nazilli District Governor Sedat Sırrı Arısoy shared his experiences. Underlining that the fight against disasters is a very demanding and important task, District Governor Arısoy said: “There are transfers in public office. There are those who need to be constantly updated. Disaster management is one of the primary tasks that requires expertise in itself. In this case, there needs to be a permanent basic knowledge. No matter how prepared we are for disasters, our buildings need to be strong. Our municipalities also have duties here. They need to be prepared for the differences between AFAD’s interpretation and disasters. My recommendation is to have a coordinator in each district. It should be the duty of the coordinator to carry out and ensure the continuity of the preparatory work.”
