Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah Announces Investigation to Identify Those Responsible for the Deadly Incident.
At least 56 people were killed and many others injured in violence and a stampede at a football stadium in southeastern Guinea.
The deadly incident occurred on Sunday during the final match of a local football tournament held at a stadium in Nzérékoré, Guinea’s second-largest city, located approximately 570 kilometers (354 miles) from the capital, Conakry.
Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah announced an investigation to identify those responsible for the tragedy.
“Protests against refereeing decisions led to stone-throwing by fans and a fatal stampede. Hospital services have reported a provisional toll of 56 dead and several injured,” he said.
The government expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged to honor those who lost their lives.
Earlier unofficial reports on Sunday estimated the death toll to be around 100.
According to local media, the chaos erupted in the final moments of the match between the Labé football team and the Nzérékoré team.
Tensions flared when Labé players protested a goal scored by the opposing Nzérékoré team, sparking clashes among fans in the stands.
Reports suggest that refereeing decisions, including two red cards for Labé players and a penalty awarded to Nzérékoré, escalated the violence.
Some accounts claim that the tragedy was exacerbated when security forces intervened with tear gas.
The match was the final event of the tournament, sponsored by Guinea’s President, General Mamady Doumbouya.
