President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan speaks at the symposium organized for the 64th anniversary of the May 27 coup. President Erdoğan said, “We will not forget and forgive the coup plotters even if 64 years, let alone centuries, have passed since the coup” and stated that the May 27 Coup was the result of a provocation implemented step by step.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a speech at the “Constitution of Turkey’s Century, Civil Constitution, Strong Turkey Symposium” held at Adnan Menderes Congress Center Freedom and Democracy Island.
The highlights of President Erdoğan’s speech are as follows:
- No matter what anyone says, all 3 of our statesmen who were subjected to various pressures and torture in Yassıada courts have written their names as martyrs in the hearts of our nation.
- This nation will always remember the late Menderes and his friends with gratitude and some embarrassment of not being able to prevent their execution. We will not forget and forgive the coup plotters even if 64 years have passed, let alone centuries. None of the scenes and decisions taken in the Yassiada trials are coincidental.
“The revolution of the nation was put on trial”
- At the same time, May 14th was tried on Yassıada, our democracy, the revolution of the nation was tried. Who is in power in this country and who has the power of power was wanted to be written in the memory of the nation with blood. In the person of Menderes and his friends, it was the free will of the nation that was first convicted and then executed.
- The dark shadow of May 27 has haunted the national will with coups repeated every 10 years. From newspapers that read like junta bulletins to gangs of five competing for roles, the same scenario was put into circulation several times.
“They tried every way for 22 years”
- We are the government that has been subjected to the most coup attempts in Turkish political history. Those who could not digest the Anatolian revolution tried every means to usurp the national will for 22 years. They attempted to overthrow the elected government with the December 17-25 attempt. They attempted to destroy the peace of our cities with pit terror. Most recently, with the July 15 coup attempt, they darkened their eyes enough to directly target our person, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and our beloved nation itself. All of these have happened. Apart from these, there were many secret and open attempts. They unleashed on us whatever tutelage apparatus they had at their disposal. We never backed down. We showed very clearly to all the tutelage enthusiasts that the national will cannot be taken over with tanks and rifles. We have demonstrated that the crime of coup d’état will not go unpunished in this country.
“The era of coups and memorandums is over”
- The era of coups and memorandums is over in this country. The days of muddying the water and fishing democracy in murky water are over in this country. In this country, the days of political engineering based on indictments, indictments, hitmen and terrorist organizations are over. There is only one way to come to power in Turkey and that is through the ballot box where the saintly will of the nation is freely manifested. We will not allow anyone to ambush our democracy and national will. Whoever goes beyond the law will find us. In Turkey, sovereignty belongs to the nation unconditionally. We recognize no power above the national will. A constitution that is drafted without taking into account the ideas, demands and concerns of the people and without seeking consensus is crippled and handicapped from its birth and is more likely to produce a crisis.
“We need to accept some facts”
- With the new constitution, we aim to carry all these achievements even further. We have shared with the public on different occasions why our country needs a new constitution. The Constitution is at the top of the hierarchy of norms. The straitjacket that the 1961 Constitution forced upon the nation and the national will was further tightened in 1982. Turkey’s condemnation to the current coup constitution undermines trust in politics. At this point, we need to accept some realities. We cannot continue with our current constitution, whose framework was drawn by the putschists and whose language is problematic. It is a source of embarrassment for the political institution to spend the 100th year of our Republic with a coup constitution.
- We cannot inflict this shame on our nation any longer. In the 28th legislative term, I believe that it is a national duty for the political institution to draft a new constitution.
“They will not be able to escape being cursed just like Hitler”
- Israel rained missiles on the refugee camp. This massacre has once again exposed the treacherous face of the terrorist state. Netanyahu is cornered in his country, he cannot prolong his political life with more blood. Just like Hitler, whom he admires, they will not be able to escape being remembered with a curse. We will do everything in our power to hold these murderers to account. May God help our brothers and sisters in Gaza.”
