The General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs of the Ministry of Interior sent a letter to the marriage registry offices and announced that in order to prevent the acquisition of Turkish citizenship through marriage, the person who wants to marry must have the right to stay legally in the country, otherwise the application should not be accepted.

In the letter, it was stated that there has been a great increase in the number of foreigners who want to come and settle in Turkey since the beginning of the 2000s, and that obtaining a residence permit by marrying Turkish citizens is an issue open to abuse and opens the doors to becoming a Turkish citizen, and that the marriage application of foreign nationals who want to get married should not be taken if they do not have the right to legal stay.

“In the letters received by our Ministry, it is stated that due to the turmoil in the countries on our borders and the geographical location of our country, there has been a great increase in the number of foreigners who want to settle in our country legally or illegally since the beginning of the 2000s, and marriage with a Turkish citizen, It has been reported that it is one of the most preferred methods for obtaining a residence permit in our country and gaining Turkish citizenship because it seems easy to apply, but it is a subject open to abuse, and that the realization of marriage transactions of foreigners who have not entered our country legally provides the opportunity to stay in our country easily to people with ulterior motives who may threaten our national security and sovereignty, and opens the doors to become a Turkish citizen. “
