In the opening session of the new legislative assembly held in Senegal, Member of Parliament Malick Ndiaye (41) was elected as the President of the National Assembly.

Ndiaye had gained significant attention during the legislative elections on November 17, securing a major victory and serving as the national communication secretary for the ruling party, Senegalese Patriots for the African Homeland (Pastef). Since April 2024, he had been serving as the Minister of Infrastructure, Land, and Air Transport in the government led by Ousmane Sonko.

Following the elections, Aissata Tall Sall, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Justice under President Macky Sall, was elected to head the opposition’s single parliamentary group.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, considered the strongest candidate for the presidency of the Assembly, stepped down from his parliamentary seat despite being at the top of the Pastef list in the elections. Additionally, former President Macky Sall, leader of the Takku Wallu list, also gave up his parliamentary position after his list won 16 seats.

In the legislative elections held on November 17, Pastef achieved a major victory, winning 130 out of the 165 contested seats. These elections were the first held since the National Assembly was dissolved on September 12.
