A new president was elected in the 37th round of the presidential elections held due to the expiration of the 4-year term of office of the President of the Court of Cassation Mehmet Akarca. Ömer Kerkez, President of the 3rd Civil Chamber of the Court of Cassation, was elected President of the Court of Cassation with 193 votes in the 37th round
The 4-year term of office of Akarca, who was elected as the President of the Court of Cassation on March 24, 2020, expired on March 24.
In this context, the members of the Court of Cassation went to the polls on March 25 for the first round to determine the new president of the Supreme Court, who will serve for four years.
In the first 36 rounds, the Supreme Court of Cassation was unable to determine the president as no candidate received at least 175 votes, which is the absolute majority of the 348 members.
In the 37th round held today, Ömer Kerkez, President of the 3rd Civil Chamber of the Court of Cassation, was elected President of the Court of Cassation in the 37th round.
According to the election results; 324 votes were cast in the election. Current President Mehmet Akarca received 103 votes and Ömer Kerkez received 193 votes.
There was an important development in the election for the Presidency of the Court of Cassation after the 34th round. Muhsin Şentürk, President of the 3rd Chamber of the Court of Cassation, withdrew his candidacy for the Presidency of the Court of Cassation.
Who is Ömer Kerkez?
Ömer Kerkez was born in Antakya in 1966. After graduating from Ankara University Faculty of Law in 1988, Kerkez started his career as a candidate for judge/prosecutor in Hatay.
He worked as a public prosecutor in Elbistan, Kozluk, Erzin and as an examining judge, Head of Department, Deputy Director General, Director General and Member of the Supreme Council of Judges and Prosecutors at the Ministry of Justice.
Kerkez was elected as a member of the Court of Cassation on July 5, 2017 and as the President of the 3rd Civil Chamber of the Court of Cassation on February 14, 2023, and became the First President of the Court of Cassation on May 14, 2024 in the First Presidency election held by the General Assembly of the Court of Cassation.
