Hakkari Mayor Mehmet Sıddık Akış was detained in Van. The reason for the detention was announced as an investigation conducted by Hakkari Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. A 10-day march and demonstration ban was imposed in the city. The Ministry of Interior announced that Hakkari Mayor Mehmet Sıddık Akış was dismissed and a trustee was appointed in his place.
Hakkari Mayor Mehmet Sıddık Akış was detained in Van. While no announcement has been made yet about Akış’s detention, police closed Altay Street in the morning and started a search at Hakkari Municipality. According to a statement released by the Ministry of Interior, Hakkari Governor Ali Çelik has been appointed as Acting Mayor of Hakkari Municipality in place of Akış, who was suspended from duty.
10-day ban in Hakkari
Hakkari Governorate announced a 10-day ban on demonstrations and open-air meetings.
In a statement released by the governor’s office, it was stated that the ban aims to prevent actions and attacks that are considered to directly and clearly constitute the conditions for limitation and prohibition stipulated in the constitution and laws.
In the statement, it is aimed to ensure the security of life and property of citizens, to eliminate the plans of terrorist organizations, to protect the rights and freedoms of others, and to prevent the spread of violent incidents:
“Within the geographical borders of Hakkari province, from 08.00 on June 3 until 23.59 on June 12. For 10 days from 08.00 on June 3 until 23.59 on June 12, activities such as demonstrations, open-air meetings and indoor meetings, press statements, sit-ins and surveys, setting up tents and stands, organizing signature campaigns, distributing leaflets, brochures and flyers and all kinds of protest actions in accordance with the provisions of the Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstration Marches and the relevant articles of the Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstration Marches and Provincial Administration Law No. 5442 are prohibited.”
