The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.

In the United Nations (UN) Security Council, the draft resolution demanding international support for the three-stage ceasefire proposal in the Gaza Strip announced by US President Joe Biden and calling on Hamas to accept the proposal was adopted with 14 votes in favor and 1 abstention, while Russia abstained.

The proposed three-stage plan for a lasting and comprehensive cessation of hostilities calls for an immediate, full and complete ceasefire with the release of hostages, including women, the elderly and the wounded, and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners. It also includes the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas of Gaza, the return of Palestinians to their homes and neighborhoods in the territory, including in the north, and the safe and effective distribution of humanitarian aid on a large scale. The second phase envisages a permanent end to the crisis in exchange for the release of all hostages still in Gaza and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. The third phase aims to launch a multi-year reconstruction plan for Gaza and the return of the bodies of dead prisoners.
