The United States and Ukraine signed a ten-year security agreement during the G7 Summit in Italy.
US President Biden and Ukrainian President Zelensky held a joint press conference on the margins of the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Fasano, Italy. The two leaders signed a 10-year defense cooperation agreement and emphasized the importance of this agreement for NATO’s security and Ukraine’s defense capacity.
Biden praised the freezing of some of Russia’s financial assets and the redirection of $50 billion of this fund to Ukraine as part of the agreement and stated that they will help Ukraine with weapons, ammunition and other support without sending troops. He also emphasized that this agreement is a peaceful commitment and that they will continue to support Ukraine against Russia.
Zelensky thanked the United States and said that this agreement will deepen defense cooperation. At the G7 Summit, it was decided to grant a $50 billion loan to Ukraine, using the interest income from the frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank as collateral. With this decision, Western countries aim to support Ukraine by freezing Russian assets.
