In a meeting with his Israeli counterpart Tzachi Hanegbi, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan expressed serious US concerns about Israel’s planned large-scale ground operation in Rafah in Gaza. In a statement released by the White House, the White House said Sullivan emphasized the continued support for Israel in its fight against Hamas, referring to the Hamas attacks on October 7. However, Sullivan conveyed to the Israeli side that US President Joe Biden opposes and is deeply concerned about Israel’s comprehensive ground operation in Gaza. During the meeting, Hanegbi stated that they took these US concerns and messages into consideration. In addition, Sullivan said, they discussed alternative methods of targeting Hamas members in Gaza without harming civilians.
